What is the Austin Venture Lab:

The Austin Venture Lab is a two- or three-credit, two-term (winter and spring) experiential course designed to take your business idea and turn it into a sustainable student business.

In this course, students will:

  • Do customer discovery
  • Identify customer needs
  • Develop new product concepts
  • Develop and manufacture a prototype
  • Estimate implementation costs
  • Pitch your business at competitions and to investors

Students will have the opportunity to develop their own product or service concepts. Product concepts pursued in this course are limited to products where it is feasible to build proof-of-concepts prototypes (no strictly research/theoretical projects are accepted). Service concepts should be those which can be easily and reasonably implemented within the scope of the time allotted and the capability of the team. In addition, each student team enrolled in this course will have the opportunity to work with a mentor who will provide business guidance.

Applying to the Austin Venture Lab:

For consideration, students must pitch their business idea before a panel of judges. Pitching help is available and you are always welcome to discuss your idea and your pitch with Austin Entrepreneurship Program Staff before making your final presentation – we want you to succeed.

You do not need a team – but it is highly encouraged to have one. If you don’t currently have teammates – we will help you find some during the term.
