College of Business Design Programs Laptop Recommendations/Requirements

With the increased technology used in the classroom, the following information provides laptop purchasing guidelines for all students in the College of Business Design Programs.

PRE-PROGRAM

It is recommended to purchase laptops for pre-program students. If you are interested in purchasing the appropriate computer devices and hardware prior to entering into professional school for your intended major, please see the professional program laptop guidelines below.

  • Pre-Apparel Design and Merchandising Management students use MS office programs. Refer to the professional program laptop guidelines for details.
  • Pre-Interior Design students use basic MS Office programs and Adobe CS programs in Pre-Interior Design courses. Refer to Pro-Interior Design laptop guidelines for hardware and software requirements for details.

PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS

Each Professional Program requires the purchase of a laptop. It is expected that each student will have purchased a laptop that meets the requirements below no later than the commencement of the Fall Term in which the Professional Program begins.

APPAREL DESIGN & MERCHANDISING

It is highly recommended to purchase a laptop for apparel design and merchandising management students. Due to complications with software on Mac OS X, purchasing a Windows PC is advised. If you have already purchased a MacBook, please see the requirements below.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS (General Guidelines)
Recommended Storage (hard drive):

No less than 256GB; 500GB Solid State Drive (SSD) would be best.

Recommended Memory (RAM):

8GB minimum, with available expansion slots; 16GB recommended.

Recommended Processors:

Intel® i5 or i7-Series processor or AMD® equivalent with SSE2 technology. Highest affordable CPU speed rating recommended.

If you already purchased a Mac: A MacBook Pro 13-inch or 15-inch with the modifications below will be sufficient for this program.  A 120-256GB partition must be created using Boot Camp to accommodate the Microsoft Windows operating system and other applications that will be used in the pro-program.  It is recommended that the Windows partition be created when the student first purchases the Mac.  Windows OS is available to students at no cost through the College of Business/Microsoft Academic Alliance.  Visit the College of Business DreamSpark™ site for more information, or contact the College of Business Helpdesk for help.  For partitioning instructions and installing Windows OS on the laptop, visit: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468 or go to the Milne Computing Center room 201.
