Dr. Martell earned a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from New York University and is currently an Instructor of Management in the College of Business at Oregon State University. He has held tenured faculty positions in the School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Canada and in the departments of psychology at Columbia University and Montana State University.

His research is in human resource management and organizational behavior and, in particular, he is concerned with the dynamics of workplace discrimination, performance management and organizational stratification. This research has appeared in numerous top-tier journals including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Research in Organizational Behavior, American Psychologist and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes; and, it has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation. He has served continuously as Contributing Editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology since 1999.

In addition to teaching and research, he has extensive consulting experience that involved working with the EEOC and employment law firms engaged in high-profile, class-wide discrimination litigation and the design of post-litigation injunctive relief aimed at enhancing equal employment opportunity
