Definition of an Internship

An internship is a supervised work experience related to a student’s major or career goal. The work experience may be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid (based on Department of Labor criteria), for credit or not and is primarily in an off-campus environment. An important element that distinguishes an internship from a short-term job or volunteer assignment is that an intentional learning agenda is structured into the experience.

Benefits of Hosting Interns

One of the more significant advantages to providing internships is the opportunity to select and develop future talent. You have the opportunity to evaluate and screen potential employees prior to making a full‐time position offer, which leads to financial savings. Employers have reported converting more than half of eligible interns into full‐time hires. If hired in a permanent position, previous interns assimilate faster to their new roles and have shorter learning curves than external hires.
