Prior to joining OSU, Jim fininshed a 21-year career at Standard Insurance Company, traded publicly until 2016 as Stancorp Financial Group. While there Jim ran departments like Legal, Underwriting, Claims and Sales. In the last half of his time there, he was on the executive leadership team as a Section 16 Named Executive, at times running various lines of business including Individual Disability Insurance, Individual Annuities, an RIA, a 401(k) and pension business, and co-leading The Standard's dominant business of group insurance. Jim spent years participating on earnings and investor calls, presenting at Investor Days and investor conferences, and meeting with regulators and rating agencies.
Prior to rejoining The Standard in 1994, Jim was a lawyer for five years at Bullivant Houser Bailey in Portland, where he specialized in all aspects of insurance work including coverage analysis, trial work and regulatory work. His duties there included life and health insurance, property and casualty insurance, agent E&O insurance, and directors' and officers' E&O insurance.
Jim graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Oregon School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review, and he received his Bachelor of Science, Business Administration (Finance), from Oregon State University.
