Quilt history encompasses more than just the distant past where many makers have been long forgotten. It also examines the recent past - and even the present. The post World War II era is often singled out as a time when quiltmaking declined in popularity. This book challenges that notion, showcasing and honoring quilts and quiltmakers from this vibrant period with the same heart and passion we reserve for cherished memories and people we hold dear.
In this Quilt Study, members of the American Quilt Study Group selected an inspiration quilt made between 1945 and 1979. They explored not only the quilt itself but the maker or designer along with the fabrics and techniques used in its creation. The inspiration quilts reveal a wide variety of styles, colors, and skill levels.
Forty members committed to creating a study quilt. A full exhibition of all the study quilts occurred at the AQSG Seminar in Portland, Maine. Seminar attendees viewing the original exhibit were impressed and touched by the depth of emotion that the quilts and the stories revealed.
In this book, you will read about the creation of each study quilt. Makers selected their own processes while adhering to the Quilt Study guidelines. The joys and challenges encountered along the way reflect the dedication and creativity of each participant. The study guidelines are also provided, offering insight into the process from the makers’ perspective.
This is the thirteenth biennial Quilt Study. The next study will debut in 2027. The purpose of the Quilt Study is to encourage members to develop a meaningful relationship with one inspiration quilt and the study quilt brought to fruition with their creative skill. AQSG members continue to embrace this process with enthusiasm, uncovering more discoveries with each study.
