This quilt design examines how to translate GAI imagery into a fabricable artifact under a constrained palette of six colors. Using Parsons and Campbell’s four-phase digital design workflow, the work documents how Midjourney images must be carefully reworked through human expertise, shifting creative labor toward conceptualization. Months of prompting produced a high volume of variations, but also decision overload and AI fatigue. The “quilt” outputs failed fabricability due to color constraints and unrealistic construction. A breakthrough came by prompting tile-like illustrations focused on geometric compositions, along with external inspiration that redirected the concept. Digital prototyping in Photoshop refined the color placement of the selected image, and Illustrator supported refinement in scaling, quilt math, and template creation. Multiple piecing and quilting techniques were used to create a cohesive and balanced design. The finished quilt makes visible the designer’s translation labor and where GAI ends and skilled making begins. 39.3% acceptance rate across all levels (227 total). 82 professional submitted.
