How to decide if graduate school is the right next step for you

At the Oregon State University College of Business, we’re committed to helping every student succeed academically, professionally and personally. From robust academic advising to vibrant student communities, career support and wellness resources, the college provides a wide range of services designed to help students thrive during their studies and beyond.

Whether connecting with peers, exploring professional development opportunities or accessing university-wide support, OSU and the College of Business offer the tools and guidance students need to make the most of their graduate experience.

1. Connect with peers
through the MBAA and MBAAN

Every meaningful decision begins with clarity. Ask yourself why you’re pursuing graduate school and how it aligns with your long‑term career goals.

Are you looking to advance in your current field, pivot into a new one or deepen your expertise? A strong sense of purpose not only guides your program choice — it fuels your motivation throughout the journey.

Passion matters, too. Graduate school is a commitment, and being genuinely interested in your field makes the experience more rewarding and sustainable.

2. Understand the career outcomes

A graduate degree is an investment in your future, so take time to understand the professional landscape. Research job growth in your field, degree requirements for aspirational roles, realistic salary ranges and the career paths of Oregon State alumni. Look for evidence that the degree can meaningfully advance your career — whether through new skills, expanded networks or access to higher‑level roles.

3. Evaluate the financial picture

Finances are a practical and essential part of the decision. Calculate the full cost of the program, including tuition, fees, materials and potential living expenses and compare costs at other business schools. Explore funding options such as scholarships, employer tuition benefits and financial aid.

Equally as important is considering the return on investment. How might this degree increase your earning potential or open doors to new opportunities? Understanding both the cost and the potential payoff helps you make a confident, informed choice.

4. Assess your timing and commitment

Your graduate business degree requires time, energy and focus. Reflect honestly on your current responsibilities and capacity. Can you balance coursework with your job, family or other commitments? Talking with a graduate program recruiter or a College of Business graduate ambassador (our current students!) can help you determine whether now is the right moment — and what format (fully online, hybrid or in-person) and pace (full-time or part-time) best fits your lifestyle.

5. Determine program fit and your readiness

Finally, take a close look at everything the OSU College of Business has to offer. Review the curriculum, faculty expertise and support services. Do they align with your goals and learning style?

Equally important is assessing your personal readiness. Strong study habits, motivation, and a supportive environment — whether at home, at work or in your community — make a significant difference in your success.

Making your decision with confidence

Graduate school can be a transformative experience, opening doors to new knowledge, new networks and new career possibilities. By taking the time to reflect on your goals, research your options and evaluate your readiness, you’ll be well‑equipped to choose a path that supports your ambitions and prepares you for long‑term success.
