How to pay for graduate school: A practical guide for business students

Deciding to pursue graduate school is exciting but figuring out how to pay for it can raise a lot of practical questions. Most students don’t fund graduate school through a single source. Instead, they piece together scholarships, planning and support over time. Knowing what options are available, and when to act, can make the process far more manageable.

At Oregon State University’s College of Business, we’re committed to making graduate education accessible. Below is a comprehensive guide to how to pay for graduate school, with a focus on scholarships, financial planning and institutional support.

1. Start with a financial plan

Before exploring specific funding sources, it’s important to understand the total cost of graduate school. This includes:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Books and course materials
  • Technology and program-related costs
  • Living expenses (if applicable)

Creating a clear financial plan early allows you to identify gaps and prioritize funding opportunities. Many students combine multiple funding sources to pay for graduate school, rather than relying on just one.

2. Apply for graduate school scholarships early

Scholarships are one of the most effective ways to reduce the cost of graduate school because they do not need to be repaid. Oregon State University and the College of Business offer a variety of scholarships and funding opportunities specifically for graduate students.

Graduate business program named scholarships

One of the most impactful funding opportunities is the Graduate Business Program Named Scholarships fund. While scholarships are awarded throughout the year, early planning can make a meaningful difference.

Important deadline to know:

  • February 1 is a priority deadline for the Graduate Business Program Named Scholarships fund.
  • Priority consideration is given to students who have both a completed graduate application and a completed scholarship application by this date.

Applying early not only increases your chances of receiving funding, but it also allows you to plan your finances with greater confidence.
