Hazel Segismar-Coles: Growth comes from challenges

Hazel Segismar-Coles felt supported by her OSU community. While earning her undergraduate degree and then her MBA, Segismar-Coles felt uplifted by peers, professors and mentors. When it was her turn, she became a teaching assistant, a peer mentor for the Career Success Center and the VP of marketing for the Business Analytics Club, and wanted to be a source of inspiration for her son.
College of Business: What are your plans after graduation?
Hazel Segismar: Hoping to land a job, and applying for Healthcare Administration Fellowship
COB: What’s your major and/or minor?
HS: MBA Business Analytics
COB: What’s one thing you learned during your academic journey that made a big impact?
HS: One key lesson from my academic journey is the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone. By participating in class discussions, networking, and taking on leadership roles, I learned that growth comes from challenging myself. These experiences boosted my confidence and opened new opportunities.
COB: Was there a moment you realized you’d grown during your time at OSU?
HS: I realized I had grown during my time at OSU when I started taking on roles like being a peer mentor, a TA, and joining clubs. A few years ago, I never imagined myself guiding others or speaking up in front of a group. But through those experiences, I became more confident in my voice and more comfortable taking the lead. That shift really showed me how much I’ve grown.
COB: Who or what helped you along the way?
HS: The community I discovered at OSU played a significant role in my journey — especially the support from my peers, professors and mentors. Their encouragement and willingness to share their experiences made a tremendous difference in my life. Whether it was through late-night study sessions, career advice, or simply checking in to see how I was doing, having people who believed in me helped me stay motivated and facilitated my personal growth.
COB: Were you involved in any experiences you’d like to highlight?
HS: I was VP of marketing of Business Analytics Club, a peer mentor for CSC, and a TA for grad students.
