Uriel Carrillo: Side hustle in Weatherford becomes business plan

Uriel Carrillo has a lot going on — active in the Real Estate Club, serving as a mentor for the OSU College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), supporting the college’s student recruitment, getting involved in music performance and giving guitar lessons… But it was cutting hair in the Weatherford bathroom and growing that business that opened up his future plans.

What are your plans after graduation?

Obtaining my barber license and continuing to grow my business, to then open up a barbershop.

What’s your major and/or minor?

Design and Innovation Management

What’s one thing you learned during your academic journey that made a big impact?

Community and connections are just as important as knowledge. I feel like being involved and building relationships brought me most, if not all of my opportunities while at OSU.

Was there a moment you realized you’d grown during your time at OSU?

I am most proud of myself for being able to manage my own business over these past four years while also being a full-time student involved with multiple extracurriculars.

Who or what helped you along the way?

My supervisor, Bailey Wood, and the CAMP Program.

Were you involved in any experiences you’d like to highlight?

During my freshman year, I started cutting hair in the Weatherford bathroom. My business grew a lot, and I’ve continued to cut hair every weekend since then. I’ve also had opportunities to share my passion for music by performing with my family in events held at OSU. I’ve been a part of the real estate club, been a peer mentor for the College of Business, been a mentor for CAMP, I’ve worked as a recruitment program ambassador for the College of Business. I would also give guitar lessons to multiple students.

Anything else you’d like to share?

My favorite memory was winning a talent show in Chicago at the USHLI National Conference.
