Online learning offers flexibility and access, but it also brings unique challenges that can affect student success if not addressed early. Without the structure of a physical classroom, students often need to take greater ownership of their time, technology and engagement. Feelings of isolation, difficulty staying motivated, and unfamiliarity with digital tools can make it harder to stay on track. Additionally, balancing school with work or family responsibilities can become more complex in an online environment, where deadlines may feel less immediate but are equally important.
To succeed, students must be proactive, organized and willing to reach out for support. Building connections early, ensuring reliable technology, and understanding course expectations can make a significant difference in confidence and performance. Online learners who prepare before the term begins are better equipped to manage coursework and adapt to challenges.
Fortunately, we have many resources that are intentionally built into our online programs to support student success. The following strategies provide a foundation to help you navigate the online learning environment effectively and stay connected, focused, and supported throughout your academic journey.

Engage early. You belong here.
Watch for pre-term communications, virtual events and student communities. Early engagement helps you feel connected and supported before the term begins. Taking part in introductions, discussion boards, or online orientations can reduce uncertainty and build confidence before coursework starts.
Make sure your technology is ready.
Confirm reliable access to a computer, internet, and required software — and know where to get technical help before classes start. This is most important to our online learners. Testing systems in advance and troubleshooting early prevents disruptions during critical assignments or live sessions.
Get organized before the term begins.
Log into Canvas, review course expectations if available, and plan dedicated time each week for coursework to avoid last-minute stress. Creating a personal schedule and setting reminders can improve consistency and reduce the pressure of overlapping deadlines.
Know your support resources.
Familiarize yourself with Ecampus and College of Business support options, including tutoring, advising, success coaching, and library services, so help is easy to access when you need it. Understanding how to use these services ensures you’re never navigating challenges alone.
Stay on pace and reach out early.
Online learning offers flexibility, but success in Ecampus comes from consistent time management, keeping up with weekly coursework, and connecting with instructors or support teams as soon as questions arise. Early communication helps resolve issues before they grow.
