Transferring to a new college can be an exciting step forward, but it also comes with challenges that are different from those faced by first-time students. Transfer students often arrive with prior academic experience, yet they must quickly adapt to a new campus culture, unfamiliar expectations and different academic systems. Unlike first-year students, they may have less time to adjust before diving into upper-division coursework, where expectations are higher and the pace can be more demanding.
In addition, transfer students may find it harder to build connections, especially if they commute or join a community where social networks are already established. Navigating new resources, understanding degree requirements, and balancing academic responsibilities with work or personal commitments can create added pressure. Without strong support systems in place, it can be easy to feel disconnected or unsure of where to turn for help.
However, with intentional planning and early engagement, transfer students can successfully transition and thrive in their new environment. By taking proactive steps to connect, stay organized, and use available resources, you can build a strong foundation for success. The following strategies are designed to help you navigate your transition, feel confident in your new setting, and stay on track toward your academic goals.

Get oriented to campus.
Take time to locate your classrooms, study spaces, advising offices, and student support areas before the term begins. Knowing where to go saves time and lowers stress during busy weeks. Walking your schedule ahead of time and identifying key buildings helps you feel more comfortable and confident on your first days.
Plug into the College of Business community.
Even if you don’t live on campus, you belong here. Look for events, student organizations, instructor office hours, and college-specific spaces where you can meet peers and instructors to build connections. Consistent participation helps you feel included and creates opportunities to develop meaningful academic and professional relationships.
Ask for help early and advocate for yourself.
Transfer students often jump right into upper-division coursework. If questions or challenges arise, reaching out early to instructors, advisors, or support teams will make a big difference in your confidence and success. Being proactive ensures small concerns don’t become major obstacles later in the term.
Plan for commuting and time on campus.
Build your class schedule, commute time, and study time into a realistic weekly plan. Identify gaps between classes when you can stay on campus to study, meet with peers, or access resources. Using this time intentionally can improve productivity and help you stay engaged with campus life.
Connect with advising early.
Transfer students benefit from checking in early to confirm degree progress, understand College of Business expectations, and plan next steps toward graduation. Be proactive! Regular advising appointments keep you informed and ensure you are making steady progress toward completing your degree.
