Overview
Biography
Jiyao Chen is an Associate Professor of Technology and Innovation Management in the Oregon State University College of Business. His research examines artificial intelligence, technological change, innovation, new product development, and organizational knowledge.
His current research increasingly focuses on how artificial intelligence changes organizations and the people who work, learn, evaluate, and make decisions within them. His work examines human–AI work systems, organizational knowledge and memory in machine-learning systems, AI-mediated judgment and evaluation, the development and certification of expertise under generative AI, and the implications of AI for scholarly knowledge production.
A related research stream examines how technological discontinuities, particularly architectural shifts in AI, reshape innovation and the adaptation of researchers and inventors. Using patent and scientific-publication data, Chen studies how prior knowledge, collaborative networks, team structure, and evolving evaluation standards influence the adoption and development of new technological architectures.
His research bridges technology and innovation management, organization theory, strategy, and computational approaches to the study of technological change. Prior to joining Oregon State University, he was a Research Associate at the Center for Research in Technology and Innovation at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. He received his Ph.D. in Technology Management from Stevens Institute of Technology.
