Course Overview

In the dynamic world of entrepreneurship, having a comprehensive understanding of the relevant laws is crucial to the success of a new venture. This comprehensive course equips entrepreneurs with the essential knowledge and insights into business law, enabling them to navigate legal complexities and make informed decisions that can impact their venture's growth and sustainability.

The course begins by covering the basics of business law, providing entrepreneurs with a solid foundation in legal concepts and principles. Participants will explore different legal structures for a new venture, such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, and limited liability companies (LLCs). Understanding the advantages, disadvantages, and legal obligations associated with each structure will allow entrepreneurs to make informed decisions when establishing and structuring their businesses.

Through engaging lectures, case studies, and practical examples, this course provides entrepreneurs with a comprehensive understanding of business law. What You’ll Learn

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and distinguish between the three basic legal structures of business organization and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Understand the rules, liabilities, and differences between general partnerships, limited partnerships, limited liability partnerships, and corporations.
  • Define and distinguish between patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets while discussing major legal protections for intellectual property rights.
  • Define the four legal elements involved in forming a contract and explain key legal concepts such as the Statute of Frauds and Article 2 of the Universal Commercial Code.
  • Grasp the basic legal principles related to personal and real property, legal means for transferring ownership of real property, the major areas of federal regulation that apply to businesses, and key aspects of tax law as it pertains to businesses.

John
Inglish

Senior Policy Analyst, Oregon Health Authority

John Inglish is a senior policy analyst in Government Relations at the Oregon Health Authority and an instructor with the OSU College of Business’s Continuing and Professional Education program. He brings a multidisciplinary background with experience in occupational therapy, law, public administration, and education policy. John has held leadership roles including associate director of the Disability Law Center of Utah and director of the Conflict and Dispute Resolution master’s program at the University of Oregon School of Law.

In Oregon, he has managed safe and healthy schools initiatives, led the state’s education mediation program, and directed a consulting unit supporting state education agencies across the country. John serves on the board of the Oregon Mediation Association and the coordinating committee of the Restorative Justice Coalition of Oregon. He holds degrees in occupational therapy, psychology, legal studies, public administration, and law, and is currently a co-investigator on a federal grant focused on restorative justice in schools.
