The Healthcare Leadership Certificate, created by Oregon State University in partnership with the Hospital Association of Oregon, helps healthcare professionals build the leadership skills often overlooked when promotions are based solely on technical expertise. This hybrid program combines a two-day in-person kickoff with online instructor-led modules, offering flexibility while maintaining the power of collaborative learning.

Participants will gain tools to better understand themselves, build stronger teams, and lead organizations through today’s complex challenges. No prerequisites are required, making it accessible for emerging leaders as well as experienced managers seeking to elevate their leadership capabilities.

Audience: Professionals from all industries, including business, healthcare, tech, education, and nonprofit.

Training Schedule:

The Lead. Always. Leadership Program begins with a two-day, in-person workshop at Oregon State University’s College of Business (Austin Hall, Room 126) on January 21-22, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. Participants then continue online through OSU’s Canvas learning platform with six instructor-led modules running from January 26, 2026, through July 12, 2026.

  • Module 1: January 26- February 15, 2026
  • Module 2: February 23 - March 15, 2026
  • Module 3: March 23 - April 12, 2026
  • Module 4: April 20 - May 17, 2026
  • Module 5: May 25 - June 14, 2026
  • Module 6: June 22 - July 12, 2026

Live Webinars:
In addition to the in-person and online learning modules, participants will join monthly, live Zoom workshops led by Oregon State University faculty. Each 60-minute session is designed to deepen understanding of the current module’s theme and provide opportunities for interactive discussion with instructors and peers.

Program Outline

In-Person Kickoff (2 Days)

  • Exploring Leadership Identity, Strengths, and Core Values
  • Use strategic mapping to understand your organization and audience.
  • Create an Individual Development Plan (IDP).
  • Evaluate workplace culture and team dynamics.
  • Employ scorecards to measure performance and strategic objectives.
  • Apply frameworks to identify leadership strengths and development areas.

Module 1 – Understanding Emotional Intelligence (3 Weeks)

  • Define emotional intelligence (EQ) and its role in leadership.
  • Identify personal EQ strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Develop an EQ action plan with SMART goals.

Module 2 – Enhancing Interpersonal Communication (3 Weeks)

  • Recognize key elements of interpersonal communication.
  • Adapt communication styles to various audiences and contexts.
  • Apply strategies for effective dialogue in professional environments.

Module 3 – Resolving Conflict Through Dialogue (3 Weeks)

  • Identify types of conflict (interpersonal, organizational, cultural).
  • Apply negotiation, mediation, and collaboration strategies.
  • Practice active listening and non-verbal communication in conflict resolution.

Module 4 – Promoting Inclusivity & Diversity (3 Weeks)

  • Explore key terms and concepts: diversity, equity, inclusion, bias.
  • Practice cultural responsiveness and inclusive communication.
  • Translate inclusion into action and examine impacts of bias in organizations.

Module 5 – Problem-Solving & Leading Change Skills (3 Weeks)

  • Apply tools like SWOT and root cause analysis to real challenges.
  • Lead change initiatives by setting clear goals and engaging stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and resilience through critical thinking.

Module 6 – Facilitating Team Development and Collaboration (3 Weeks)

  • Identify stages of team development and their relevance to success.
  • Evaluate effective team characteristics and leadership’s impact on dynamics.
  • Apply strategies to overcome barriers such as breakdowns and lack of trust.

Required Courses For Certificate

This certificate program consists of a single course. To earn the certificate, the course must be completed with a grade of C/pass or better.
