Course Overview

The Legal Aspects of HR course is designed to equip HR leaders with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate landscape of employment laws at the local, state, and federal levels. In today's complex regulatory environment, it is crucial for HR professionals to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate legal requirements and ensure their organizations maintain a safe, fair, and equitable working environment.


Throughout the course, participants will engage in a dynamic learning experience that combines case studies, lectures, and real-world examples. They will delve into key subject areas that are fundamental to legal compliance in HR, crisis management, risk management, employment, and discrimination issues, as well as health and safety considerations.


By the end of the course, participants will have developed a solid foundation in the legal aspects of HR, enabling them to navigate the complex legal landscape and ensure legal compliance within their organizations. They will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage crises, mitigate risks, address employment and discrimination issues, and promote a safe and healthy work environment.


Course Format

Instructor-led week-to-week cadence, with assignments, discussion boards, and learning assessments (quizzes) opening on Monday and to be completed by the end of the week. This gives students flexibility to review materials at their leisure. Additionally, recorded lectures and video recordings are available to enhance learning objectives.

Alex defends employers in employment-related administrative claims and lawsuits and has litigated several jury trials and argued numerous motions in both state and federal court. He also advises and provides training to company owners and supervisors on issues relating to workplace discrimination, family leave, wage and hour laws, and noncompetition, nonsolicitation, and nondisclosure agreements.

Alex graduated from the University of Alabama and The Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College. He graduated magna cum laude from Lewis & Clark, where he received the Legal Analysis and Writing Honors Award and served on the Editorial Board of Environmental Law as the Editor for the online journal.

Alex has been admitted to the bar in both Oregon and Washington.
