Congratulations
class of 2020

Note from the Dean

We are excited to celebrate this important milestone with you, as you graduate and move into the next phase of your life: becoming an alumnus of the College of Business. We recognize and applaud all of your efforts, commitment, successes and especially your resilience in these unusual and uncertain times.

We know it hasn’t been easy, but you’ve adapted so well. And in a few years, when you reflect on this time, I hope you are as proud of yourselves as we are of you. We can’t wait to see how you impact your communities and change the world for the better.

We want to share a few stories from your fellow graduates. Like you, they are examples of what our fellow Beavers can accomplish, and how those accomplishments will pave the path for future success.

James R. Coakley, Ph.D.
Interim Dean, College of Business

We would love to hear your story, too:

2020 Graduate April Davenport Takes Bold Steps With Adaptive Apparel

On the eve of graduation, apparel design and merchandising management double major April Davenport has an award-winning fashion line, an award-winning business and a position at Billy Footwear, an adaptive shoe company, beginning in June. “Growing up I always had a struggle inside me when I thought about the fashion industry,” she said. “I was confused about why I didn’t see people like me being represented by fashion companies. When I learned about adaptive apparel, it seemed to answer the question I continually had about why people like me weren’t worth representing. Through adaptive design, I have been able to use my difficult experience with a long-term disability to inform my decisions, and cultivate empathy for the people I am designing for. I find this very rewarding — and empowering.”

Shwood co-founder Dan Genco's Advice to the Class of 2020

"Life continues to provide amazing experiences as we move through it. Some of them I never would have fathomed being a reality when in college. Similar to when I was in high school, my concept of college was nothing close to what it actually was. I look back with super fond memories — sports, parties, friendships, projects, travel — but every one of them has been topped since."

I will miss the people and the campus itself. The people are the ones who shaped me to who I am today and Austin Hall holds a special place in my heart. That is where all the COB events happen, all the late-night study sessions/group meet ups, and even grabbing a snack from Trader Bings.

My first day at OSU was one of my proudest moments, and once I have those two degrees in my hand, that will be the most proud time at OSU. I say my first day because it was the first time I experienced what a university was like and this was after not knowing if I was even going to attend high education.

I'm proud of how much I've been able to accomplish during my time at OSU, but one thing I've learned in college is that all of my accomplishments have a relational component and are not simply measured by what I have achieved. I'm most proud of the relationships I've been able to have and grow in while getting two amazing degrees, competing as a gymnastics student-athlete, and being an active community member.

One of my favorite professors is Larry Martin because, just like his classes, he is innovative in his teachings and he incorporates real life experiences into the class room. Larry's love for the Beavers and dedication to his students has inspired me to one day return to OSU and give back to my fellow Beavers.

I will miss being on campus with like-minded driven young people. The energy on campus is like no other I will feel in life and I will always remember it. Being taught by prestigious faculty was something I will always look back on positively as I head into my career.

I realized that I picked the right major when I took an investment class in my junior year. I am very proud of myself because I was an English learner and I faced many challenges due to the language barrier, but I am graduating this year with a double major.

I realized I could make a difference in any facet of the world through business. It didn’t have to be through money but through helping others and making a difference in the world.

I am really proud to be graduating with a focus in Family Business. I am also really proud of myself for always having a professional job while I went to school on campus full time. It was so difficult at times to juggle the demands of both, but it really prepared me for the real world.

We did It. Congrats to all of you for all your achievements. It’s been a pleasure being in classes with you all and I see an overwhelming amount of success for each and every one of you. We’re persevering through some challenging time now, but we will come out the other side stronger with higher character than ever before.

Professor Eugene Young is one of my favorite professors because he is honest and instills the interview skills that are needed. You know what is expected of you and he provides feedback for what to do better next time. And Professor Stephen Summers helped to provide writing assignments that were interesting and applied to real life problems. If a major life event came up, he would work with you on assignment deadlines.

The most proud I have been with myself at OSU was the second club meeting I attended. The first was a good step but the second is when you commit to continue to go back. If it wasn't for sales club I don't know where my career would have gone.

I am most proud of seeing it through for 4 years, regardless of my doubts, fears and anxieties, and graduating as the first in my family. We did this together, through thick and thin, a pandemic and social upheaval. Take that strength into your future.
