OSU defines courtesy faculty as those who are contributing to the University’s teaching, scholarship, and service missions but whose primary appointment and salary are not through the University. Courtesy appointments in College of Business Design Programs will be made for a three-year period with renewal possible given continued contributions.

To receive an appointment, one or more of the following expectations must be met during the period of appointment, though other contributions to the department will also be considered:

  • serve on departmental committees
  • serve on Design Programs graduate student committees other than as graduate council representative
  • participate in departmental seminars
  • collaborate with Design Programs faculty on research/creative activity projects
  • teach regularly-offered courses
  • teach specially-offered courses
  • serve as a PI or co-PI on a grant that is written for work in Design Programs

Procedure for Appointment

To request a courtesy appointment, the following must be provided to the Chair of the College of Business Design Programs by the applicant:

  • letter of application
  • letter of support from an existing, regular status Design Programs faculty member
  • short vita including any publications or creative activities

The department chair will determine if a courtesy appointment seems appropriate and if so, will forward materials to faculty for comment. If faculty input is positive, the department chair will then forward the above information along with a completed Job Form and Personal Demographic form to the Dean for approval.

Nominees approved for courtesy faculty appointments will be informed of their appointment in a letter from the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and International Programs. Upon appointment, the Design Programs Department Chair will provide the courtesy faculty member with a position description.

Review

The Design Programs Department Chair will conduct a review of courtesy appointments at the end of their three-year duration and will recommend to the faculty either continuation or termination. In addition, review of an appointment can occur in the event of an expected change in the form of interaction or contribution by the appointee.

Terminating a Courtesy Appointment

When an individual is no longer actively involved with OSU, the department/unit should submit a Termination Form to terminate the courtesy appointment.

Academic Rank

Courtesy appointments may or may not carry academic rank. The same criteria used in determining appropriate rank for regular faculty appointments apply to courtesy appointments. Promotion in academic rank may be recommended when the level of professional contribution increases. Promotion in rank is handled in a manner similar to that of individuals holding regular appointments and the standards are identical. Nominations for advancement in rank should follow the same cycle and deadlines as for regular faculty.

Benefits

Courtesy faculty may use the Valley Library without charge, obtain a picture identification card, join the recreation facilities at the regular staff rate, and purchase parking and athletic facility privileges. Space, telephone, clerical assistance, and other privileges are provided at departmental discretion from departmental resources.

Courtesy faculty members are not eligible to receive medical and dental benefits or other employee insurances.
